Patriotism is a state of mind. Treason in this country is one of two specific acts. One can imagine when one is convinced that the country is headed to hell that making war upon it or giving aid or comfort to its enemies is the only way to save it. In order to save the union we had to destroy it. Many secessionists denied that they were traitors to the union, but claimed they were patriotic South Carolinians when they fired on Fort Sumter. It was a question of what is my fatherland?
When someone destroys a Federal building in Oklahoma city he is a traitor, regardless of how strongly held the delusion that he loves his country may be. When someone makes war on the principles on which the country is built, I think he is a traitor. If he opposes our present state and seeks to return to slavery and injustice by deception or force and violence, he is a traitor.
