Quite so, Lather...The "mythos of Progress" and the "deep ecology mythos" are both "ways in which we explain the cosmos to ourselves," and ourselves to ourselves as well, since we are part of the cosmos.

But even they were never all-embracing, universally-accepted mythoses (is there such a plural?). I personally was not under the spell of either. (I'm the one who never watched Star Trek, or read science fiction, remember?) So the collapse of one or the other doesn't particularly affect me.
