I would agree that under your definition the term patriot is pretty meaningless.

Decided to break down and consult a dictionary, which as usual is pretty useless except it has an interesting second definition. The first is what you would expect: "a person who loves, supports, and defends his or her [a politically correct dictionary! but internally consistent since the usage note to "he" recognizes the use as an indefinite personal pronoun] country and its interests." No note as to who can define the interests.

But the second definition is "a person who regards himself or herself as a defender, esp. of indiviual rights, against presumed interference by the federal government." Sounds almost as though it were written by a member of the Christian Coalition or a right wing Militia.

I wonder if the lexicographers who crafted these definitions noted the inherent conflict between the definitions.
