Access Power Named Among Internet PhoneService Providers ''Best Buys''

June 28, 1999 01:28 PM
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 28, 1999--Access Power Inc. ACCR was recently named by SmartMoney.com, an on-line Wall Street Journal magazine, as one of the "best buy" providers of Internet phone service.

The company was selected from more than 300 Internet telephony service providers (ITSPs) for its innovative flat-rate service fee. With Access Power's Net.Caller(tm) service callers can call from anywhere in the world from their multimedia PC and Internet connection to any regular phone in the continental U.S., Hawaii, Alaska and Canada for a flat-rate of $10 per month.

"Because of the number of service providers on the market. Access Power is looking for ways to set its service apart. We believe our Net.Caller product and and our innovative flat-rate fee design gives us the edge on our competition," Glenn Smith, chairman and chief executive officer of Access Power, said.

Smith noted that Internet telephone service is relatively new -- starting in 1995 -- yet it already represents a substantial and growing market. "IP telephony revenues for the U.S. in 1999 are estimated to be $150 million, with projected growth to reach $1.3 billion by 2002. That's only part of the picture, Internet, phone service is going to change the way people communicate in the future," Smith said.

Access Power began marketing its products in 1997, long before the bulk of the service providers came on the scene. "We expect to see lots of changes over the next few years and improved service is one of them. High-speed connections, such as broadband, are improving the overall quality of Internet phone service," Smith said. He added that Access Power is taking additional steps with improvements to its Net.Caller service. The company is currently installing hardware to double the capacity of the network to accommodate the growth of Net.Caller. Quality improvements being implemented will reduce latency, or delays, in phone conversations and reduce choppiness in voice.
