Pretty down and dirty assessment, Mike. Getting to the basics of the matter, you have identified the major impediments, along with sheer distance from a CO, of deploying DSL (some flavors worse than others as we have seen). I've seen several studies published showing that residential DSL is only feasible for 40% to 60% of telco customers due to the factors stated. Add in high cost (but coming down) and the picture is not so rosy as the telephone advocates would have you believe.

Still, 40% to 60% of telephone customers is a huge number since telephone service is available to about 98% of all households in the US. No wonder there has been a rush from cable companies to get into the market and capture market share quickly before DSL becomes universally available. Pretty good strategy I think. Now if the cable modem engineering was just better.....
