NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, U.S.A., 1997 MAR 19 (NB) -- By Ian Stokell.
Cable modems and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) are both gaining in
popularity as more companies seek to overcome the bandwidth deficiency
that comes with the increase in multimedia-oriented transmissions. Now
3Com Corp. [NASDAQ:COMS] says it will deliver products based on the
Multimedia Cable Network System (MCNS) specification and ATM technology
for its end-to-end cable networking offering.

The company says it is developing cable modems based on both
technologies. 3Com plans to develop MCNS cable modems using chip sets
from Broadcom Corp.

3Com claims its end-to-end, data-over-cable offerings "will enable data
communications for residential, educational, and commercial markets over
an existing coax cable delivery systems and advanced hybrid fiber/coax
networks."
