Mike,

Diamond Rio! (before it was recently acquired) has already won part of the battle for mp3 and there is a grass roots movement to keep mp3 alive. It will be hard to stuff that genie back into a bottle for sure.

The SDMI will need to find a solution that avoids adding complexity to the downloading of content. One question I had was whether the music is encoded using a serializtion feature unique to a given flash card or whether the download is freely portable. Also, there has been some mention of limiting the number of plays once the content is downloaded.

In the end, I think people would be willing to pay for some content, but not all. They will be intolerant of unnecessary restrictions. And it will be the burden of the music industry to devise a workable and affordable solution. Either way I believe that flash memory cards in one or all of the multiple available forms will be the real winners.

BusinessWire: Flash Memory Surges and 1999 Shipments Expected
to Exceed $3 Billion, According to Cahners In-Stat Group.

Flash memory consumption surged beyond all expectations in the first quarter of 1999 with Japan and Asia Pacific leading the way,'' commented Jesse Huffman, senior analyst for Cahners In-Stat Group's Semiconductor Memory Group.

$3 billion in 1999 sales is a lot of kappa maki.
