News item: China's Net Population to Surge
Wired News Report

The world's largest nation is already the fastest growing Internet market in Asia and will become a global leader in the next five years, according to a recent study.
"The Internet in China," published Monday by BDA China and The Strategis Group , said that Chinese Internet users will increase from 2.1 million to more than 6.7 million over the next year.

China's Internet base will grow at an annual rate of nearly 60 percent over the next five years, the report said.

"With more than 33 million users by 2003, each new user that comes online creates new opportunities for Internet-related business," said Duncan Clark, partner of BDA China.

China's Internet service provider (ISP) market has been limited to providers with access to the fattest pipes -- typically those funded or owned by China Telecom.

China's competitive ISP market is opening up to new players, such as cable operators, to tap revenues that are expected to exceed US$4 billion by 2003.

Although foreign vendors currently dominate China's infrastructure market, domestic players are expanding to serve the sector, which the report's authors predict will exceed $160 million in 1999.
