NBase-Xyplex, New Access, and
Charlotte's Web exemplify the latest trends in
infrastructure hardware.

Convergence and the vast amounts of
bandwidth it requires is being enabled by
quantum leaps in the underlying network
infrastructure. Companies such as New
Access, Charlotte's Web Networks, and
NBase-Xyplex have unveiled new products,
giving us a glimpse of future network
hardware.

One of the stumbling blocks in network
expansion has been the cost of
interconnecting nodes, such as those found on
a traditional metropolitan network. While
nodes are connected physically via fiber, the
other technology that makes it all work is
Dense Wave Division Multiplexing
(DWDM), which is typically a point-to-point
proposition between nodes. Each inter-node
connection usually requires the significant
expense of a dedicated laser and receiver,
each set operating on a different wavelength.
The result is an exorbitant price tag for fully
interconnected structures.
