I absolutely agree re the portable/luggable idea. Egghead's retail stores used to carry something similar to what you describe.

But I think you have the right idea - do it yourself. Get a mini-tower case. Put a minimum of stuff in it. Attach a nice solid handle to the top. Put a retractable cord re-winder in it, taken from the broken vacuum cleaner. Find a keyboard that will fit inside the case. Maybe your flat panel will fit in there too.

Get to wherever or even in the Crown Room, take the side panel off the case, plug in the power and the keyboard (small with touchpad attached) and voila, a portable, full power computer. Small enough to carry on the plane, even, and if a bottle of scotch could fit in it, who needs battery power?
