<Many deeply religious people are fervent believers in the separation of
church and state; there is no contradiction between praying publicly and
opposing the intrusion of religion into publicly funded activities. Of course
that is true, but I think that we have taken aim at too many innocuous practices,
such as non- sectarian benedictions at commencement.>

Non-sectarian benedictions at commencement would GREATLY offend me. In fact, they make me sick. If I were one of the graduates, I would be doubly offended, because this would be such a significant and memorable occasion for me.

Is there some reason those who want to pray cannot do it quietly? That is offensive to no one at all.
