Motorola in ADSL deal with Marconi

Genoa, Italy - A design pact reached last week between Motorola Inc.'s wireline semiconductor group and Marconi S.p.A. is the second major Italian pact in two weeks involving the CopperGold transceiver for asymmetric digital subscriber lines (ADSL). Marconi's use of CopperGold in broadband access systems for central offices and subscriber terminals augments an earlier deal between Motorola and Italtel S.p.A. (Milan), another leading European supplier of WAN-access equipment, which is partially owned by Siemens and STET.

Marconi will integrate the discrete multitone-based (DMT) CopperGold transceiver into the Access Systems family of WAN-access devices. Italtel, meanwhile, will integrate CopperGold into access multiplexers that will use ATM backbones to deliver digital-video broadcast services over twisted-pair copper wire. The two pacts indicate a preference for DMT line coding among European OEMs.
