Joan,
Please read the dog article in the current Atlantic Monthly. Leo was merely "cringing" a age-old successful canine strategy to appease the Alpha you way above him. Even Omega wolves cringe -- live shorter lives than Alphas and have much worse conditioning. Leo didn't walk with head and tail high like a noble wolf, did he? He couldn't stare you in the eyes interminably.
My GSHP Graf was as his name suggests noble. He kindly shared leadership of the pack with me. I can't recall him ever showing guilt, or shame, or apologizing. He dominated every dog, and most people. He was noble in the worst way that it implies. He escaped and ran free whenever he could. He hunted with his pack in the woods. He guarded us as a noble should. He exploited us as a noble will.
Of course, I am an animal too. And I have never felt guilt.
