FTV's Portland-Los Angeles Fiber-Optic Network Now Commercial

BUTTE, Mont., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- FTV Communications LLC, a
consortium of three telecommunications companies that built a 1,700-mile
fiber-optic inland route between Portland, Ore., and Los Angeles
announced today the conduit, cable, and regeneration site installations
are complete, fully operational, and carrying commercial traffic.

Touch America, a subsidiary of the Montana Power Company (NYSE: MTP -
news), Enron Communications, a wholly owned subsidiary of Enron Corp.
(NYSE: ENE - news), and Williams Communications, a unit of Williams
(NYSE: WMB - news), formed FTV, a limited liability company, in
September 1997 to construct the fiber route that passes through Boise,
Salt Lake City and Las Vegas. The agreement stipulates that each company
shares equally in the costs and proceeds of the fiber network that
stretches through the key western corridor of the United States.

FTV and IXC Communications Inc. of Los Angeles also agreed to share in
the project, with IXC building the segment from Los Angeles to Las
Vegas, while FTV constructed from Las Vegas to Portland. Each company
will maintain its own portion of the route.
