Re: Qwest + US West/Frontier and FCC Comments

June 28 -- Qwest Communications International said its intended purchase of U S West and Frontier would pass regulatory scrutiny, despite concerns expressed by a former FCC commissioner to the contrary.

Qwest Sunday released a letter written by James Quello, a commissioner with the FCC for 23 years, stating the marriage between Qwest and the two telcos would not run into any regulatory obstacles.

Quello said Qwest's stated commitment to forego long distance revenues and operations in the 14-state U S West region is "a clear, simple, and effective way of complying with the requirements of section 271" of the Telecommunications Act.

Qwest released the letter in response to comments made by former FCC chairman Reed Hundt, who last week said a Qwest/U S West combination "would take an exceedingly long time to travel the regulatory minefield and may well blow up trying."

Thread,
Just continuing my tracking of all the strange comments concerning the recent spate of LD-ILEC mergers. I linked this post to some previous comments on the Qwest/US West deal. Apparently the 1996 Telcom act is not being interpreted the same way by two FCC commissioners(one being a former).

What makes this really strange is Joe Nacchio's comments on TV about(in my previous post), "We have the long distance backbone, they have the local loop." I guess Quello wasn't tuned into CNBC when I was?
