Teilhard's theology is, in fact, inconsistent with Catholic dogma. It just plain is, and there's no way around it. So it's no surprise that the Church heirarchy had problems with it.

But they let him continue his work as a paleontologist, which they funded. He was sent to China, where he helped discover Peking man, an early homo erectus.
