Here is an interest way to look at the overall IT market. IMP estimates the total US IT market at about 300 Billion dollars. The followin is the approx percentages of major contributors to the IT industry. Note Intel is a semicondutor company therefore not counted in these numbers
IBM 22%
HP 10%
CPQ 6%
DEC 4%
MSFT 3%
SunW 3%
Apple 3%
UIS 2%
ORCL 2%
Tandem 1%

Who do you think has to most influnce over IT managers. Clearly it is IBM. Microsoft accounts for only 3% of the total budgets. Microsoft dominates the desk top but that is it. The big money still listens to a number of different and competeing companies. If Apple is dead and only Microsoft can survive than well everyone else should throw in the towel to IBM. Looking from this angle Microsoft is not so big now are they.
