J,

I pretty much detailed the DOCSIS V1.0, V1.1 and V1.2 relationships
in message 567, 571, and 594. To summarize: DOCSIS V1.1 is
built on top of V1.0 and adds support for Quality of Service.
DOCSIS V1.2 is an extension of V1.1 and provides a hi performance
upstream physical layer "upgrade" consisting of enhancements to
TDMA and the use of S-CDMA.

If you follow the IEEE 802.14 HiPHY working group, past voting
in the group said that in V1.2 the enhanced TDMA modes are
mandatory in the cable modem, and the S-CDMA mode is optional
in the cable modem. The DOCSIS project can make the S-CDMA
mandatory. (Note, I have to catch up with IEEE 802.14 to see
if this optional vs mandatory has changed.)

DOCSIS V1.2 is a proper superset of the existing DOCSIS V1.0
and V1.1 upstream physical layer modulation specifications.

DOCSIS V1.0, V1.1, and V1.2 all share the same downstream
physical layer modulation specifications.

The highlighted portion of the statement that you copied should
really say "first quarter [2000], will adopt S-CDMA [and enhanced
TDMA] for the upstream....". It is misleading to say that the
DOCSIS V1.2 specification is S-CDMA improvements only. Broadcom
submitted a lot of enhancements to the upstream TDMA portion of
the V1.2 specification.
