John,

It used to be a LOT worse. Some NAZ stocks still trade with larger spreads. Try looking at CCRD (Concord Communications) sometime. Trades with 3/4 or higher spread.

As well, look at equity option quotes. Many times options are quoted at Bid 1, Ask 1 1/4. or Bid 3/4, Ask 1. When you start taking about spreads that wide on such small units, it's criminal. They move to 3/8 till 3, and then 1/2 point spread above 3. Many times they don't split the difference with you, and make you buy the ask, and sell the bid.

The SEC started cleaning up the NAZ a while ago, and it's much better. Major stocks like CSCO and the like typically have 1/16 or 1/8 spread.

The options markets are next, IMHO.
