I need help.

My broker just called and said I have the option of taking my JDS Fitel shares in Canadian share vs. the US equivalent. Since I'm a US citizen I didn't think that was possible. Now, I'm willing to do this if it avoids the tax consequence. Do you know, first, if I can take the Canadian share and, second, if there's a tax consequence if I do. I've left messages but haven't heard back.
