What you say about the Aztecs is very true, and the best demonstration of the mixed bag of the conquest of the Americas. The Incas were also terribly despotic, and many of the Plains Indians were given to depredations against their neighbors. The Europeans have things to be ashamed of, but not as much as people think. After all, even taking the more idyllic picture of the North American Indians, was a whole continent, its land and resources, supposed to be tied up by a few million people scattered throughout, especially when many of them had no fixed territory?
