Pat: There is hope. The current US holding period to qualify for long term gains is twelve months at which time you go to a 20% hit. So if you are beyond 12 months now, cool. A nontaxable exchange is best, but absent that, a loss of 1/5 is the best US tax treatment going. As the old song goes, check with your friendly tax advisor or the IRS, but that is my understanding. Hope for your sake and mine, that is right.
