The National Post reports in its Monday edition that the outcome of a legal
battle for millions of dollars in mining royalties from Canada's richest
gold discovery will rest with an Ontario court today. Lawyers representing
two aging prospectors and rival Scintilore Explorations Ltd. are expected
to present their final arguments to the Superior Court of Justice today.
The testimony will end a bitter 11-week trial over a controversial deal
struck 20 years between prospectors John Larche and Donald McKinnon that
effectively shut the Toronto junior out of the Hemlo gold belt north of
Lake Superior. If successful, the firm stands to win up to $250-million in
past and future mining royalties. A ruling is expected in four to six
weeks. The prospectors' disputed staking work led the development of two
major gold mines: the Golden Giant mine and the David Bell mine. In a
counterclaim, Mr. Larche and Mr. McKinnon allege Scintilore is abusing the
legal process and is guilty of destroying their reputations.
