I think you are comparing apples and oranges when you compare a PC operating system like Windows with high end UNIX type OS. For its price and PC type capabilites (file mgt, browsing, etc.) Windows is quite sufficient for most home use (and for that that matter office use). You have to remember that Windows interface today is very similar to the Mac (both in ease of use and stability).

My NT station at work has probelems frequently when the complexityof operations increases, but my PC at home rarely has to be rebooted since I am doing mostly browsing and word processing at home.

Microsoft would like the world to be such tha one uses Windows for everything, but the likelihood of that happening is quite remote. But, chances of knocking Microsoft off the desktop at home and work are equally (or if not more) remote.
