There were a few deals between AltaVista and MSN over the years. In January, Microsoft announced that AltaVista would use Microsoft's HotMail as their free email service, replacing one that they had offered from another company: Microsoft Signs Agreement With Compaq to License Hotmail-Based Communications and Messaging Technologies to AltaVista microsoft.com I'm not sure what's happened with that agreement since the email service on AltaVista is still "powered by mail.com". The deal was announced in January, and doesn't state when it would take effect, but it hasn't happened yet. Prior to that, there was non-exclusive deal to include AltaVista along with several other search engines on the MSN home page: Microsoft Announces a One-Year Distribution Deal With Search Providers Worth in Excess of $60 Million microsoft.com This one is now in effect. MSN.com Search includes the MSN engine, AltaVista, Lycos, Infoseek, and Snap. (MSN search uses technologies from Inktomi and LookSmart according to this fact sheet: microsoft.com
