I wanted to become a broker in 1987, a year after graduating from university (biochem, economics, psych) and none of the big firms would take me.

I worked for the top executives at several top Vancouver Stock Exchange paper mills and learned the business from the ground up. Since I was a girl, I could not get into the boys club and so I had only one option - to learn how to trade, since that was open to anybody.

One of the people I worked for had a long standing relationship with Ian Notley, an award winning technician who was an expert at cycles, and I learned it inside and out but found cycles to be pretty imprecise; however, he gave me a copy of Edwards and Magee and it all started from there. Since most of the people who work in the brokerage business don't trade for a living, I basically started buying books and read them all.

I mostly traded Canadian penny pig dogs (excellent training ground since most of the stocks go to zero in the end so one cannot rely on the buy and hold forever theory) and when the market truly expired after Bre-X, I decided to trade spoos instead and here I am...I never want to be in the position that I was in again - a dead and illiquid market.

A couple of articles about my background -
