Linux has already and will continue to challenge MS in the server market. That is those applications where a server of some sort is required. i.e. Web server, email (POP) server, FTP server, print server, file server, etc. I don't know the most recent percentages but Linux already runs a large portion of the Internet's web servers.

The desktop market will be much harder to crack. Though some GUI's already exist, they don't yet measure up to the speed and ease of use of the Windows interface. There are also some unique challenges to be faced in creating a 'single user' interface to a 'multi user' operating system. The best possible desktop version of Linux may end up being a scaled back, streamlined version of the full kit. (i.e. why would a desktop system need DHCPD, or BIND services?)

Having said all that, the server market is really where RHAT will be looking to make their consulting and implementation revenues from.

Just my opinions.
