OK, first off, and I think I must be a congenital nay-sayer, but when I lived in New Orleans, the external tank was assembled in New Orleans, at the Martin-Marietta Michoud facility, out in New Orleans East, which is out in the swamps, really. Now that it's Lockheed-Martin, I don't know, but I think it's still made at the same place. But from time to time we'd drive out there on special days, where the plant was opened up to the public, because I am a space nut, too. And I've got Space Shuttle memorabilia, like decals and whatnot. And the thought of that pristine, immaculate tank sullied by graffiti offends my sense of amour propre. (Sp?) Maybe that's just a knee-jerk reactionary non-thought. Like Colonel Whatzit, just kind of harrumphing. The moon is eerily clean and white, and so are the stars. And the thought of man's detritus on them isn't a plus. |
