From Bloomberg Television 30 June 1999

I recorded the complete Video Section about MP3. At one point my entire screen was filled with a 20- MB SanDisk CF Card.

Here are excerpts:

"Lee Patrick Sullivan takes a look at what could be the medium of choice for 21st Century music lovers."

"Today on Bloomberg Tech Line, we'll take a look at the battle brewing over what will become the latest digital format. They are small in stature but the stakes are huge. Iomega's Clik Media, Smart Media, the Compact Flash Media from SanDisk and the Memory Stick from Sony are all jockeying for position to join the hallowed halls of recorded music."

"Usually the one that emerges the champion is the one that can be used in the most devices out there! And the one that fits that bill is the SanDisk Compact Flash card. [scene of a pair of hands holding a 20-MB SanDisk CF card], which plugs into most computers to download to download music. But the product that's a big hit right with consumers now comes from Smart Media. It takes advantage of the widely-used MP3 technology. All of these audio-storage formats are based on open standards which means that other companies can copy their design. Even Sony isn't enforcing it's patent on it's Memory Stick. Many watchers of the the industry say that the company learned it's lesson back in the 1980's when it's Beta Max video tape lost out to the inferior, but open standard, VHS tape. The Sony Video Stick is the most versatile, able to store audio, video and still photographs. But it's unusual design means that it for now can only work in Sony products. But one thing Sony does have going for it, out of all
these formats it's the only one that guards against music piracy. which is a good idea because Sony has it's own record label. It's also a good business decision, as other record labels look for the newest in digital formats.

For Bloomberg Tech-Line, I'm Lee Patrick Sullivan."
