ORACLE8I(TM) LITE SHIPS, ENABLES A NEW CLASS OF MOBILE E-BUSINESS APPLICATIONS MORE THAN FIFTY LEADING ISVS SET TO BUILD MOBILE Applications for The Oracle(R) Internet Platform
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., Jun 30, 1999 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq: ORCL), the number one choice for e-business, today announced the immediate availability of Oracle8i(TM) Lite, the fourth generation of Oracle's Internet platform for mobile computing. With this new e-business ready version, Oracle becomes the first vendor to provide continuous access to enterprise information from any browser, on any device, from any location. More than 50 Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) plan to develop mobile e-business applications for Oracle8i Lite. Oracle8i Lite will be downloadable at no cost to Internet developers via the Oracle(R) Technology Network (OTN) at technet.com at the end of next week.
The newest generation of Oracle8i Lite is specifically designed for mobile e-business applications requiring seamless synchronization with central databases, and is a key component in the delivery of Oracle's recently-announced roadmap for Oracle8i Lite. The roadmap for 1999 encompasses three key market segments -- mobile computing applications, embedded computing applications and information appliance applications.
"Oracle8i Lite's Web-to-Go feature will revolutionize our approach to portable applications. Whereas we once dealt with complex and disparate systems from third party vendors, we now have only one code base to maintain," said Ray Demich, vice president at Bank One. "We can now deploy mobile Web applications to our sales force at a fraction of the cost and time of our traditional solutions. We are very excited about the potential of this powerful technology and have had great success thus far in using the product."
Oracle8i Lite is optimized for use on small mobile application devices, such as laptops, handheld computers and personal digital assistants (PDAs), including Palm and WindowsCE devices. Oracle will offer two ways to access business-critical information quickly: offline, with Oracle8i Lite, or online, with Project Panama's wireless portal service. Oracle8i Lite is comprised of three components: * Oracle Lite -- a single-user, 50KB-750KB footprint, java-enabled, object relational database; * Web-to-Go -- a component which allows users to access the same data and Web applications both offline and online; * iConnect -- a flexible architecture that enables reliable and scalable bi-directional synchronization of data and applications.
"Oracle8i Lite is the leading choice for taking e-business applications mobile," said Denise Lahey, vice president, mobile and embedded products division at Oracle. "Users need immediate, continuous access to business-critical information, and Oracle is the only vendor who can offer seamless synchronization with a central database and access to enterprise data whether they are running connected or disconnected."
