I didn't say maybe- it happened. It was 1940. The appointment was for 1941-1942. Many notable scientists and philosophers (including Einstein, Whitehead, Dewey, Shapley, Kasner) went on record as supporting his appointment- the chancellors of several major universities (including Harvard's Sproule) came to his defense. I am surprised you don't know about this Mr. Smarty Pants- but there was a great deal written on it and I am sure you can look it up.

Bishop Manning of the Protestant Episcopal Church launched the crusade against Russel. The Hearst newspapers and Tamany Hall were in bed with the church in this matter. Mayor La Guardia also had a hand in it. The "WOrld's Greatest Newsaper" the New York times, a very liberal paper - remained silent on the whole matter until after the judgment and then did little more than print an editorial.

The matter went to trial and the appointment of Russel (by the Board of Higher Education) was revoked by the judge- in one of the worst rulings I have ever read.

Russel went to Harvard instead. And of course in 1950 he was awarded the Noble Prize for literature. But the students of New York, at least, university were preserved from his "indecency".
