Going the speed limit is dangerous around here - nobody does it, and if you do it people get pissed off. The only place I go the speed limit is inside subdivisions and in school zones and hospital zones and other places where you can expect pedestrian traffic. On the highways and Interstates, not even the cops go the speed limit.
The thing that I miss is the little courtesies like waving people over when they've got their blinkers on, or letting people pull out of driveways and parking lots when you're waiting for a light anyway. But I find people around here usually practice those courtesies, it's the people in Baton Rouge who don't, my own sister and father, even. It shocks me. Now you say people in southern Illinois are being discourteous. That shocks me too.
I have a theory that driving courteously spreads, I think I may have single-handedly caused people around here to drive courteously, and even if I am wrong about that, I know it's gotten better since we've been here, so maybe it will get better where you are, too. But screw the speed limit, unless you're in a pedestrian area. Everyone's speedometer is different, maybe yours is low. |
