(BSNS WIRE) AboveNet Demonstrates Power of Network, Reduces Costs With L AboveNet Demonstrates Power of Network, Reduces Costs With Lucent Technologies Voice Over IP Solution Business/Technology Editors MURRAY HILL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 30, 1999-- AboveNet Selects Lucent VoIP Solution For Voice, Fax, Messaging, and Call Center Operations Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced that AboveNet Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: ABOV) has signed a major contract to deploy a complete Lucent Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) solution for AboveNet's internal long-distance communications network. AboveNet is using Lucent's comprehensive, end-to-end VoIP solution on its reliable, low-latency, high-bandwidth network. AboveNet Communications is the architect of a global one-hop network that brings together high-bandwidth content sites, ISPs and Application Service Providers in centralized co-location facilities. AboveNet chose Lucent's VoIP solution to enhance communications and reduce recurring long-distance costs between its East and West Coast facilities. AboveNet is specifically using Lucent's new DEFINITY(R) Enterprise Communications Server Release 7.1, Internet Telephony Server-Enterprise (ITS-E), combined with Octel(R) 250 voice/fax messaging server, Visual Messenger, (TM) www.messenger(TM) and the future Lucent call center software to link its San Jose, Calif., and Vienna, Va., offices together via AboveNet's IP network. AboveNet chose Lucent's VoIP solution because it enables AboveNet to use its own scaleable, high-performance network without incurring the expense of dedicated T-1 links. "As a major driver behind the successful deployment of high-bandwidth applications on the Internet, AboveNet is committed to the development of VoIP," said Dave Rand, Chief Technical Officer of AboveNet. "The Lucent VoIP solution, which we are successfully deploying for our internal communications, demonstrates to our clients that our reliable, low-latency network is ideal for VoIP." "With Lucent's VoIP solution, we've been able to reduce our costs, and further improve our overall communications by allowing our employees to share their voice, fax and messaging over our IP network." said Gina McCall, Telecommunications Project Manager at AboveNet. "Lucent's Voice over IP solution has been implemented so seamlessly into our network, that our employees don't even know they are using this technology. The voice quality, features and functions are comparable to our leased lines." "Lucent is pleased that a fast-growing Internet-centric company like AboveNet chose our VoIP solution," said Karyn Mashima, Strategy vice president and Chief Technical Officer for Lucent Technologies Business Communications Systems unit. "We are giving customers like AboveNet the tools to cut their costs dramatically and enhance the overall reliability of their voice and fax communications," said Mashima. Lucent's NetCare(R) Services provided a critical role in integrating Lucent's DEFINITY Release 7.1/ITS-E solution in AboveNet's East Coast and West Coast sites. NetCare Services specifically helped AboveNet design, install and manage AboveNet's VoIP solution. Second Phase of VoIP Deployment AboveNet plans to expand the reach of its VoIP network to other U.S. sites and to international locations over the next several months. In July, AboveNet plans to add Lucent's IP Trunk Interface card to DEFINITY Release 7.1, allowing employees in its New York office to route voice and fax calls over the IP network with its San Jose and Vienna offices. AboveNet also plans to work with Lucent to deploy a call center solution that will seamlessly distribute service calls between facilities. In the next six months, AboveNet plans to add Lucent's VoIP solution to some of its international locations, including London, U.K., Vienna, Austria and Frankfurt, Germany. In addition, AboveNet's U.K. location is using Lucent's MultiMedia Communications eXchange (MMCX) so executives can share voice, video and data solution over the IP network.
