Convicted Killer Escapes in Texas HUNTSVILLE, Texas (APBNews.com) -- More than 200 lawmen trekked through swamps in 96-degree heat today tracking a convicted killer who slipped out of handcuffs, dodged gunfire and scaled three fences to escape from a maximum-security prison. Two guards were escorting Clifford Dwayne Jones, 33, through the recreation yard of the Estelle High Security Prison Unit around 12:20 p.m. Sunday when Jones broke loose and made his mad dash for freedom, officials said today. With the alarm sounding and guards firing at least twice, Jones scaled the exercise yard's chain-link fence, climbed a 12-foot perimeter fence topped with razor wire, then clambered up a lattice-work pole supporting a surveillance camera to jump a final 12-foot fence on his way to freedom, officials said.
