Shares of MCI WorldCom were pummeled by investors Wednesday amid concerns about a slowdown in revenue
growth and a potential price war in the long-distance business. The second largest U.S. long-distance
carrier (WCOM: news, msgs) sank 7 9/16 to 86 1/16, a decline of 8 percent. Concerns about the company's
results were fueled by a pair of brokerage reports.
PaineWebber analyst Eric Strumingher trimmed his projected year-over-year revenue growth to 16-16.5
percent from 17.2 percent, citing weaker results in the traditional long-distance voice business.
Earlier this week, Frontier Corp. (FRO: news, msgs), the fifth largest domestic long-distance
carrier, warned that greater competition in voice traffic would undercut its second-quarter earnings.
For that reason, analyst Simon Flannery of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter suggested Wednesday that the sector
could experience even stiffer competition going forward, which could crimp revenue some more.
For its part, MCI WorldCom declined to comment on its stock's fall-off. "As a matter of policy, we
don't comment on fluctuations in our stock price," said spokesman Frank Walter. He also declined
to discuss revenue trends in the company's long-distance voice business.
Despite their concerns, most analysts are keeping their buy ratings on MCI WorldCom. Flannery,
for instance, lists the carrier as his top pick in the long-distance sector.
As noted Wall Street analyst Jack Grubman of Salomon Smith Barney pointed out in a midday report,
MCI WorldCom is focusing on lucrative new services in the high-speed data, Internet and international
segments of its business, while de-emphasizing voice. So while revenue may be waning a bit,
Wall Street analysts are maintaining their profit projections.
MCI WorldCom is expected to earn 44 cents a share in the second quarter, according to the
consensus estimate of analysts surveyed by First Call Corp
