National Semiconductor anonunced it is selling Cyrix, the Intel competitor, to Via.

news.com

Via, for those who remember, was supposedly a company that was building Ramtron DRAM into their chipsets. Any, the gist of things appears to be that Via is a big supporter of PC-133, and that the addition of Cyrix to the Via portfolio will allow them to deliver complete processor solutions to the box makers.

For those who remember the market cap of Cyrix when it was publicly traded, the company seems to have sold for under $200 mil.

Anyway, this COULD extend the life of PC-133 and maybe even Ramtron's lousy products. It's all about the low cost PC market. Unfortunately, Ramtron DRAM had the same problem as Rambus: die penalty and licensing fees. But then they really just need a foundry and they build on spec or with firm orders.

Still paying attention, hoping for better times.
