I wasn't poking fun at you, Lather, but at the way we all -- myself definitely included -- tend to generalize about people and situations we don't have direct experience of. I'm used to laughing at myself, and shouldn't have assumed you were too. As I said, I was about to offer some of my own ideas on the issue you raised, but realized just in time I had no direct experience of what I was talking about. As a matter of fact, as I think Paul pointed out, many middle class blacks don't have any more direct experience of the lifestyle of "poor ghetto blacks" than we "whiteys" do. So it's really at least as much of a class thing as it is a race thing. I have no objection to your idea, incidentally. Joan
