The telecom equipment business is pretty "old white boy" -- most of all overseas, where women are at a disadvantage in so many cultures. Japan? A woman perhaps not such a problem perhaps, but in Southeast Asia (Thailand, Malaysia etc.) men tend to have a more open bias to the effect that women are not their equal. In Japan, the biggest problem is someone young, whether male or female. You have to send someone who is at least 35 or so if they are negotiating with senior purchasers, who tend to be in their 40's and 50's. Sending someone in their late 20's could be very insulting. As if to say the customer is not worth sending someone more senior, since Japanese companies tend to promote based largely on years with the company.

This does not compute in the "newer" fields, such as data communications equipment (stuff for the Internet etc.), software, and so on. Women as well as young people are pretty well accepted even overseas.
