June 30, 1999 05:03 AM TEMPE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 30, 1999--The Voice over the Internet (VOIP) service industry is expected to reach $1.8 billion in annual revenues by 2003.
Although this marketplace is expected to explode over the next four years, there is no clear market leader who is expected to dominate, unlike the traditional long distance market.
Currently, the VOIP industry remains very fragmented with a number of companies serving regional markets and only two firms offering national coverage. In addition, traditional long distance carriers such as AT&T T , MCI WorldCom WCOM , Sprint FON have been reluctant to enter the VOIP market due to fear of cannibalizing their lucrative traditional long distance profits.
The absence of the major telecommunications players has provided an excellent opportunity for niche players to establish their service and start building a large customer presence. Companies such as Access Power Advanced Communications ACCR , IDT IDTC , Netspeak NSPK , VocalTec Communications VOCLF have taken advantage of this opportunity to quickly build out their customer base and establish brand recognition.
Given the expected speed and growth of the VOIP market, we are likely to see the industry start consolidating, like the web portals and Internet service provider (ISP) markets. In addition, the potential for the partnering VOIP players with ISPs such as America Online AOL and EarthLink ELNK remains a strong possibility given their large established customers bases.
Access Power currently offers the lowest cost VOIP service in the U.S. and Canada at $10 per month. Access Power recently launched their partnering initiative, the affiliate Co-marketing program. The program allows the affiliates to market the $10 Monthly flat rate VOIP service to their entire customer base. Based on Access Power's recent press releases, they have signed up affiliates which have a cumulative base of approximately 1 million customers.
