I have been pushing that very issue wiht usoft/WK people for more than 3 years...that they need a very well integrated compression/encryption/transport layer to use for the wireless issue and have gotten the same poor excuse...use PPTP, which has so much overhead that it is useless in a cellular environment. what is needed is a VERY integrated data stack which provides a secure transport layer and which has the lower layers implemented in hardware to speed it up and conserve power. then and only then will these large corporations open up to a wirelss internet/intranet world. with this, you can send anything as packets, compress them by 3:1 or 4:1 (enabling almost 56k baud speed over the 14.4k line we have today), and allowing me to send corporate secure data.

I see this as the next major enabler for the wireless internet/intranet business model. It needs to be a public standard like PPP is today...
