Re: Galileo. Uno mas tiempo: I am writing this purely from memory. I don't have time to go look at books. But as I recall it now, through the muck, webs, and dryer lint, it was the phases of Venus that he saw, and that validated heliocentricity.
The Phases of Venus.
Essentially, the same as the Phases of the Moon. (New, Waxing, Gibbous, Full, etc.)
Our sister, "inferior" (orbitally interior) planet. It's simply the way the sun's light illuminates its globe from our earthly position. Simple as that. Todo. Fini.
Pure and simple.
Now, also from memory, Ole Roemer (see I can put Dutch Astronomer in these here parentheses) was also a really cool guy. HE was able to determine the speed of light, centuries ago. With not much more than a clock and his eyeballs. Eyes and Balls.
And he managed to keep them. |
