Not really. Look at Philip Kahn at Borland (now Inprise) is basically another dead company. Novell was devastated by Ray Noorda (now running Caldera, which bought DR-Dos for some $40M US, and then immediately launched at $1.5B US lawsuit against MS.

By the way both companies owned or sold a suite with WordPerfect.

Lotus, now owned by IBM, is a shell of its former self.

Netscape is another casualty.

Larry Ellison hasn't really tried to dethrone Gates, he hates him, but he hasn't ventured head-to-head with Gates. Its Gates that is trying to compete against Oracle.
