The anabaptist revolutionary state of Muenster in the 16th century was not only communist and religious, but also had women in common or polygamy (because of the heavy loss of men in the siege.) Knipperdolinck and Jan of Leyden were real heroes in my book. I think China during the cultural revolution was largely a religious state -- with a God (Mao), a holy book (The Little Red Book), a theology, a philosophy, and a great deal of irrationality. I believe the Jesuit state in Paraguay was both. There were over 200 communist-religious states in the US from 1930-1960, most of which collapsed because of religious disputes (according to a MA thesis in economics at Berkeley.
