RE: WSTL as a "trading" stock? Some of us were lured here by the (by now really "long term") promise of ADSL and broadband, and WSTL seemed to offer more than some competitors. What with the flurry of WSTL activity this AM which Michael just mentioned, I figured I'd wonder aloud that this long term promise might still justify investing as well as trading. Over on the SI:QWST board, there's been increased discussion of voice over DSL. We "know" that US West, a current QWST target, has video over DSL to subscribers in Phoenix. Could it be that the local telcos are eschewing a move to traditional long distance, a move that would require opening local markets to competition, in favor of DSL which allows the customer to decide whether the local call is for video, data, or multiple voice regardless of where the call is to but the telco treats it as a local call? If so, the recent increase in local telco adverts for ADSL (which don't quite tell us what to do with it other than browse the internet, at least the BEL adverts here in WDC don't although they do say "ask us what you can do") make sense while they upgrade their switches as does QWST's apparent decision to dispose of its traditional LD business in order to acquire US West. The QWST board doesn't have you all's hardware (i.e., modems and routers, nuts and bolts, salt of the earth) knowledge to go with the strategic guessing they do there, but it appears (somewhat fuzzily to me) that voice over DSL would allow businesses (and rich consumers) to talk as well as view or browse or send data just like a local call over one line except that with DSL multiple calls can occur simultaneously while traditional calls took multiple lines. Am I wrong or just stating the obvious? Is this still a promise, or are we watching the pieces actually fall into place if we look around enough?
