Brian,
As I indicated, my sample set may not be meaningful and how I found this out was through informal inquiry and not presented as anything but my curiousity (which is true). I have two examples within the past week; one was the purchasing agent of a small company that manufactures fiber optic modems and multiplexers and the other was in the finance department of manufacturer of telephone headsets. My questions to them were not in-depth as I am not qualified to really dig deep, but I did specifically ask if semis were part of what they were building an inventory on. Both were willing to carry inventory regardless of financial considerations to ensure that their manufacturing line didn't get shut down. Regardless of the level of merit that your points may have (and I am not questioning them), it doesn't negate what I have said other than I should probably have stated "most manufacturers that I have spoken to".
