Asian DRAM Market Sees Price Drop, Survey Says July 1, 1999 (TOKYO) -- The 30-day rolling average prices of 64Mb DRAMs (PC100, 8M x 8) in North America, Europe and Asia sold to prime buyers between May 13 and June 11, 1999 were US$6.90, US$7.15 and US$7.06, respectively, according to ICIS-LOR of the United Kingdom.
The company conducts research on global DRAM prices, and has business bases in London, Houston and Singapore.
The price in North America was down 3.01 percent, in Europe down 4.14 percent and in Asia down 5.87 percent, compared with the 30-day rolling average prices of the DRAMs on June 4 in the three regions.
As for memory modules, the spot price of a 64MB dual in-line memory module (DIMM) (PC100) in North America was US$40.26, down 2.37 percent from the previous term, in Europe US$43.06, down 2.24 percent, and in Asia US$40.17, down 4.69 percent in that term.
Prices of 64Mb synchronous DRAMs keep falling. The price in the Asian market, which showed signs of leveling-off the previous week, recorded a large drop again.
The spot price of extended data out (EDO)-type DRAMs remains at approximately US$10. DRAM makers cut production, so there is still demand for servers and old PCs. That is why the product is now in short supply.
In response to a shortage of EDO-type DRAMs, Korea's Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Japan's NEC Corp. and others are increasing their DRAM production.
With arrivals of Rambus-type and DDR-type DRAMs in the market, the demand-supply balance will differ, depending on type of product.
ICIS-LOR surveys DRAM and SRAM prices and compiles data daily (weekly for SRAMs) for its members. Nikkei Market Access, in cooperation with ICIS-LOR, reports 30-day rolling average DRAM prices weekly.
