We finally got some tests setup in our lab on the Orb drive. The Orb drive is indeed very fast on large files but when it comes to writing/reading lots of small files it is rather slow. Seems that they did significant "fudging" on the access time data.

When running backups with an in house developed application Orb will run at 60 MB/min on large files, but on average yields about 20+ MB/min. Both numbers well below rated speeds. On file compare passes we are seeing about 3 MB/min. Very curious as this should be faster than the write/verify that is done on writing. Anyway, on small file reads we are seeing equivalent speed to a pp Zip. My USB Zip is consistently in the 30 MB/min range for both read and write operations. Anyway, seems to have real speed issues when seeking.

We'll be doing more testing to ensure that these results are valid but they appear correct. Oddly, these are some of the same issues we saw with the Sparq drive we had....before it blew chunks.
