Considering that many Internet stocks are well off their recent highs, now might be a good time to dive into the sector. But do so judiciously. Buy the brands. Buy Amazon.com and eBay. Buy America Online (AOL) and Yahoo! (YHOO). These companies have saturated their markets. They've gotten there first. They're proof that the first-mover advantage is crucial for Internet companies. If you want more proof, check out the performance of Wit Capital (WITC) in the last week. Wit Capital, quite simply, is becoming the brand for online investment banks. Competitors like W.R. Hambrecht + Co. and E*Offering may offer other intriguing services, but Wit Capital got there first.
