<<Box-builders lagged behind sector yet again amid anxiety over "free PCs" being offered by numerous ISPs in their attempts to win market share...>>>
With all the noise about computers on the Street, it is time to decide to trust Mikie or not.
What is known about Dell today ? (going from memory so may not be exact)
1. Business is good as its ever been. 63% of bids are won.
Growing at multiples of the market.
2. The Nashville permanent site is not resolved. New Mayor being
elected, some politics involved around Dell's presence, but a vote on the situation is forthcoming.
3. Businesses are leaning toward the purchase of portables
with large flat screens. Dell is top rated in the category
and should have better access to the limited supplies of screens available than other companies. Especially noted is that these
cost considerably more than regular desktops and higher Asp's could
sustain profits.
With Dell being a non-contender in the under $800 market,
there may be little effect on Dell by the "free" people.
4. Dell has met or beat the estimates for 16 or more quarters,
and I believe the last 8 were within one cent ( when adjusted
for splits). It is a good bet the same will happen in August
unless Mikie has a surprise but 1 cent equals 24 mil extra
earnings and is hard to get.
5. Dell alone knows how the sales are going and the rate at which orders come in. By time of the meeting there will be only two weeks left in the quarter so some really solid figures are available.
6. We are going to get the "straight scoop" at that meeting-for good or bad. Dell is not going to pull a "CPQ" and wait until
one week before Aug earnings to give out a warning. And some of the rampant speculation will be put to rest (for few weeks at least)Hehe.
