The air was cool and crisp, a storm was brewing in the distance and you could smell the ozone in the air. It was a fresh smell, one that made everything appear new and clean. As I was looking over the valley below and the sun was setting, a rainbow appeared and I couldn't help but think of the pot of gold that would be found at the end of it. All that shiny, glittering Gold, more than a man could spend in a life time.
As dusk descended upon Jennie and ME, the fire begins to dance like little fairy's to an unknown tune, I lay here thinking about the day. About how fired up Jennie was and the run She gave ME all the way to the top of this mountain. Even with the stop by the lake this afternoon, She was still full of energy and couldn't wait to hit the trail again. I realized then, that my little girl was growing up and that She had found her true potential. In that moment of truth, she turned and looked at me and we both knew there would be no turning back.
When I mounted up again, things felt different, Jennie seemed to be bigger, stronger and had a confidence about her that she never had before. Again she looked at me with those soft, warm eyes of hers and I said come on young lady you know where you're going now, so lets ride. I gave her plenty of rein, as I did, I could feel her settle into a gallop that was comfortable and strong. She was going up that mountain like it was a flat trail. I don't think I have ever seen Jennie with that much energy. That much strength.
As we neared the top, Jennie was snorting and breathing real hard. I was concerned that she might have pushed things a little too much. So when we finally got there, to the top of the mountain, I quickly dismounted and removed my saddle from her back. Then I began to sooth her by rubbing her neck and shoulders and talking to her. I left the saddle blanket on her, because the air was thin and cool and I didn't want her to stiffen up from the hard ride. I fetched her some water from my canteen and as she licked it from my hand, she began to relax and the wild look she had in her eyes began to diminish, to the warm soft eye's that belong my Jennie.
So, as we settle down for the night, I pulled out one of my Grupo steaks and put it on the fire. While it was began to sizzle I gave Jennie her oats and was happy to see her relaxing and settling in for the night. And then I started wondering what tomorrow would bring. What a great day this has been…………… |
